After being ‘on the flat’ for many miles, the pack starts climbing this mountain and a surprisingly large proportion of the competitors
get off their bikes and start to walk uphill or sit down and give up. The rest struggle on and eventually they get to the top of the mountain,
leaving their competitors far behind.
Earlier in the race, whilst ‘on the flat’, the onesys refreshment team had driven past the pack, offering isotonic drinks to those who wanted them.
Surprisingly many riders were very insistent that they were going to stick with water because “we have always used water” and other riders replied
that they were “too busy keeping up with their competitors” to switch drinks during the race.
Luckily some riders had read the research and seen the reported results on the significant improvements that could be achieved by replacing
water with a more nutritious isotonic drink. They switched their bottles and without losing momentum continued the race.
The onesys refreshment team saw that even during the flat stage some riders were already struggling, most of them water-drinkers but there was also
evidence that the riders who had switched their drinks were soon in a better condition than their competitors.
The mountain stage put the ‘water-drinkers’ at a huge disadvantage and the more energetic ‘isotonic-drinkers’
built up such a lead that when they raced down the mountain, they never looked back.
